Man arrested after slamming into 2 police cruisers, closing stretch of Highway 401 for hours in Oshawa.
Police have arrested a 26-year-old Whitby man who allegedly rammed a stolen pickup truck into an Ontario Provincial Police cruiser on Highway 401 and caused several crashes in Oshawa on Thursday afternoon.
OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said the pickup was stolen from a contractor at a job site in Port Hope. Officers were following the vehicle and were about to stop it, when the suspect allegedly rammed the cruiser and drove off.
An officer was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
The suspect then left the highway and was driving on Champlain Avenue, when he failed to navigate a turn in the road.
The pickup mounted a curb and crossed a grassy area before crashing into two other pickup trucks in a parking lot north of the 401 at Stevenson Road South.
The suspect ran away, but Durham police caught up with him. He is now in OPP custody and faces several charges.
Schmidt said the pickup crashed into five vehicles total, including the cruiser, two Ministry of Transportation trucks and the two pickup trucks. Another police vehicle was damaged after driving over debris.
All westbound lanes of Highway 401 were closed at Harmony Road South for the investigation. They reopened just before 6:30 p.m.
