Residents in Alabama were left baffled last week when a loud boom resounded across much of the state.

The boom, nicknamed ‘Bama Boom’, has left experts stumped, with suggested causes ranging from supersonic aircrafts to meteors exploding in the atmosphere.

One terrified person tweeted: “I heard and felt an incredibly loud boom from inside my home in Moody around 1:40-1:45pm today. Shook the entire house”.

Another wrote: “This was heard across multiple counties this afternoon… doesn’t appear to be related to a geological event.”

While the booms have been heard at least 64 times in cities and towns across the United States, experts are still struggling to explain what causes them.

Theories have ranged from the noises being made by supersonic aircrafts to meteors blowing apart in the atmosphere.

The Birmingham Alabama National Weather Service said it has “no answers” for the source of the boom.

It tweeted: “Re: loud boom heard: we do not see anything indicating large fire/smoke on radar or satellite; nothing on USGS indicating an earthquake.

“We don’t have an answer, and can only hypothesize with you. 1) sonic boom from aircraft; 2) meteorite w/ current Leonid shower?”

Mysterious loud noises have left people baffled and worried before.

In March, Nottingham residents recorded an “alien hum” coming from the sky above the city.
